When visiting Altavista, Virginia, most would agree that a great place to start your day would be Chef's Drive In. With the most recent smoking ban, Chef's is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy a meal in a 1950's environment without having to clean out your wallet. One of their more enjoyable menu items, and my personal favorite, is the Western. A cheeseburger, fried egg, and a sweet tasting relish on a bun with your choice of lettuce, tomato, and onion. However, if you want a more traditional breakfast, there are a wide variety of biscuits or egg platters to be had. Of course no meal at Chef's is worth having without a side of waffle fries. Chef's has been an Altavista favorite since 1961.
Lunch
For lunch there is no other place better than to sit outside and enjoy the weather and some great food. There is no place better to do so than Dairy Freeze. Another Altavista staple since 1961, Dairy Freeze offers up delicious hot dogs, hamburgers, and chili, not to mention the scrumptious milkshakes (another personal favorite). Put your order in at one window and pick up at another, sit down outside and enjoy a great meal. Don't forget to pick up a t-shirt (and to congratulate the 2009 Colonels for winning a football state championship).
Dinner
There is nothing better than a beautifully crafted pizza, creamy alfredo sauce, or a delicious calzone. In Altavista, there is no place better to find great Italian food than Napoli's. Locally owned and operated, you can enjoy a beautifully prepared Italian or American dish in a comfortable smoke free environment.
What to Do...
Morning
To get a great understanding of Altavista, there is no other way better than speaking with the people who live there. Mornings are a great opportunity to get out and speak with locals who congregate at local business and restaurants while they read the local paper or sip on coffee.
Afternoon
The Avoca Museum, located just outside of town, is a country Victorian house constructed on land that has been passed down from generation to generation since 1755. The current house was constructed in 1901. After being deeded to the town of Altavista in 1977 the property has seen many restorations. It is now a museum that bridges the gap between the hustle and bustle of the technological age and the simplicity that existed during the mid 1700's.
Evening
Nothing can relax the soul more so than a relaxing day beside of the river. Altavista's Riverside Park offers just that. With a scenic view of the Staunton River, Riverside Park has much to offer. From it's simple parks to it's walking circle, Riverside Park is a great place to release some steam while enjoy nature to it's fullest.
Late Night
Napoli's Underground is the hip place for people to enjoy themselves in a social environment. Napoli's Underground features guest DJ's spinning today's hottest tracks. However, DJ's also feature many local acts in tune with the music.
